What Should You Do If a Black Bear Enters Your Yard?
Wildlife experts generally agree on a few key principles.
1. Give the Bear Plenty of Space
Black bears rarely seek out people. In most cases, they’re simply passing through in search of food or water. Never approach a bear for a closer look or to take a photo. If cubs are present, the mother may become defensive if she feels they’re threatened.

Fortunately, attacks by American black bears are extremely rare.
If one does occur, guidance differs from brown/grizzly bears. The National Park Service advises that if a black bear attacks, do not play dead. Instead, try to escape to a secure location if possible, and if escape isn’t possible, fight back, focusing on the bear’s face and muzzle.
