Installing a Peephole for Security

Typically found in front doors, peepholes (also known as door viewers) are a simple and easy way to see who’s on your doorstep. When reviewing the kits available, be sure to select one that includes the peephole barrel, lenses, and mounting hardware. Some kits may also include a drill bit for installation. There are small but important variations among product options, so pay attention to the differences.

• Field of view: Choose a peephole that has a wide-angle lens that allows you to see a broad area outside your door.
• Optical quality: Most kits should, by default, offer you a crisp, clear view of what’s outside.
• Privacy cover: Some kits offer a privacy cover you can close at your choosing.
• Aesthetics: Hardware comes in a variety of colors (black, nickel, bronze, brass, etc.) and finishes (satin, matte, brushed, antique, etc.).

The peephole hardware should cost less than $20, even for a high-quality kit. Talk about a bargain!

Installing a Peephole

Even if you’re not very handy, installing a peephole is a simple DIY task. It should take you just a few minutes to complete this project, plus any time you need to gather materials and tools.

Tools for Installation

To begin, gather the kit and other items you will need for the installation, including:

• Safety gear, including eye protection
• Tape measure
• Pencil
• Cordless drill
• The right drill bit—a brad point bit for a wood door or a standard ½-inch, high-speed steel bit if your front door is made of metal, fiberglass, or composite
• Silicone sealant
• Screwdriver (or other tool provided by your hardware kit)
• Optional, but helpful: weights or wedges to hold the door, sandpaper, small brush or cloth, vacuum

As mentioned, some hardware kits may include the drill bit you’ll need for your project.

Installation Instructions

When you’ve assembled everything and are ready to proceed with the installation, take the following steps to install the peephole correctly:

• Choose the right spot. Most peepholes are 58”–60” from the floor, but you may choose a different height. Find the center of the door’s width and mark where these measurements intersect with a pencil. Double-check your measurements and line up your eye with your installation spot to make sure it feels right.
• Stabilize the door by closing it or using weights or wedges.
• Drill a hole at the marked point. Depending on your bit and your door material, you may need to drill a pilot hole. You’ll have to go through the door completely, but drilling partway from each side minimizes unattractive tearout. Remove any debris with sandpaper and a brush or vacuum.
• Separate the peephole barrel into two parts. Apply a small amount of sealant to the inside lip of the lens side, which will keep moisture out.
• Insert the lens side into the door’s exterior and the viewer side into the interior. Connect the two parts and secure them with the screw or tool provided. Wipe away any extra sealant.
• If your peephole has adjustable lenses, adjust them to ensure the clearest view.
• Check that the peephole has a secure, snug fit and is flush with the door’s surface.
• Confirm that looking through the peephole from the inside out gives you a clear wide-angle view outside.
